As the seasons change here in Boulder, Colorado, it’s time for me to switch up my locations. When clients want photos which showcase the great beauty of Colorado during the winter, then it’s time to find spots that are attractive year-round. A nice thing about Colorado is that we have intermittent sunny and warm days year round to enjoy the outdoors. So on this warm and sunny afternoon, I headed out with the Morgan family to a golden field east of town. I love the look of golden fields of grass when they are backlit by the sun.

Straight out of the gate I’m going to acknowledge that these aren’t the most wild and crazy photos that I’ve ever posted! But this is the kind of solid family portraits that real clients want, so I thought that it’s deserving of a post! The Schmitz family came to Boulder to visit their daughter at the University of Colorado Parents’ Weekend. With the fall colors in full effect, it was the perfect time to head up to Chautauqua for some Flatirons mountain shots. For the first shot, I wanted to capture the brilliant yellow foliage in the background. The key to this shot is using a lighting setup to put great light on the family’s faces.

Next we wanted to get a photo with a mountain view. Unfortunately the traditional Flatirons view is horribly backlit in the afternoon, so we shot with the sun towards the north. I used my lighting to provide some fill on their faces to lessen the harsh shadows from the sun.

Finally, I wanted to get some more casual and fun portraits. Shooting with the strobes at high power means that I can’t shoot in rapid fire mode. So I finished up shooting with backlit natural light. This way I was able to have even lighting on their faces, yet also shoot in continuous mode, thereby capturing the best expressions. In the end, we were able to capture 3 distinctly different looking shots in the same area. After the group shots we went on to capture some individual shots that are similar to my usual style. Thanks for reading!

The latest installment of the wedding blog comes to you with some epic Estes Park Wedding Photography. Eric and Nicole chose Lost Antler Ranch as their wedding venue. The Ranch is a brand new venue that sits in a gorgeous valley on the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Nicole, Eric, and I had a fantabulous engagement photo session back in Boulder a few months ago. They are already the tallest couple ever, and I told them that during the wedding I was going to use the wide angle lens to make them look even taller. Just like this.

Eric is a friend of mine who I know through his managing of wedding rock band of awesomeness, Meniskus. Since I know these guys, and I know that these guys are a bunch of jokesters, we took a lot of fun pictures of the guys goofing around. You should see the ones that I’m NOT posting.

The ladies also had their fun, but in a more traditional, scenic, and dare I say, dignified manner.

After days of cold weather and rain, the ceremony was held on the shore of the man made lake on a picture perfect bluebird day in the mountains.

Immediately after the ceremony, the wedding party paddled kayaks and rowboats out to the island in the middle of the lake for a celebratory toast. Well that was a first!

There were so many great locations for the Creative Portraits. I could have shot for hours if I had the time. There were great lines and angles around the barn.

Later in the day, the sun was setting down directly across the lake. The specular highlights in the reflections in the lake were incredibly bright. I don’t think I’ve ever seen highlights quite like these.

As the sun went down the guest retreated into the heated tent as the temperature was dropping quickly. The “Best Band” kicked into gear and everyone danced the night away to cap off an incredible day. Until next time, Cheers. -Steve Z
