Fun Family Portraits in Downtown Boulder

Here are some pics from a photo shoot that I did with my friend Cecilia and her family earlier in the summer. We started out with some urban shots on the west end of pearl street and eventually made our way towards the nature of Boulder Creek. I think we achieved that perfect balance of natural moments and great portraits. I like to throw in a few signature silly moments just to make sure that we’re still having fun!

Margarita and Manuel: Red Rocks Wedding Photography

Welcome dearest readers to a savory 17 course visual feast with blogilicious trimmings.  Margarita and Manual prepared a tantalizingly delectable festival with spicy Mexican flavor for a couple hundred of their closest friends and family at their Denver estate. The ceremony was held at Rockland Community Church in the scenic mountains of Genesse. We stopped along the way at Red Rocks Park to shoot some creative portraits with some big scenery. It wasn’t nearly as death defying as it looks! Back at the reception, there were tons of details and decorations prepared by Margarita and Amber. From a mariachi band to a burning dome, everyone was assured a full plate. And yours truly ate his biggest portion of dessert of the year, as the tres leches wedding cake was to die for!

monica - genius..
Love the frame job of the groom with the white arch. Love the slight tilt of the ones on the cliff…totally leaves me dizzy and questioning. So many brilliant shots and fresh perspectives.

Natalie: Fairview Yearbook Pictures

Creative Photo of Natalie for her High School Senior Portrait

My never ending quest for unique and modern senior portraits has led me to Boulder’s Lower East Side. It is never hard to find a cool background, as there is a plethora of amazing randomness to choose from. Meet the star of today’s shoot:  Natalie from Fairview High School.

Modern and Urban Female High School Senior Posing Like a Mermaid

I’ve been thinking about doing a senior portrait shoot with one of my vintage cruiser bikes for quite a while now. When Natalie and her Mom visited my studio for a consultation; I knew that she was just the girl for the job! I chose my 1976 Schwinn Spitfire for this shoot since it’s more feminine than my 1952 Monark Cycle King. That means I still need to do a cruiser shoot with a guy!

Yet another concept that I’ve been kicking around in my head is doing a senior portrait night shoot. I positioned this shoot late in the day so that after the sun set we could do a night scene. How about that cow print garage door?!

Jamie and Greg: Creative Engagement Photos

OK so I’m going to tell you right now in the first sentence; I’m lying. These are not actually engagement photos, since Jamie and Greg are already happily married! However, I don’t really have a blog category for “Couple’s Portraits”, so I’m just going to put it into that category.  Sometimes you have to shove a round peg into a square hole, which is something like the story of my life.  But I’m digressing here, and I really should be talking about the great time I had hanging out in Boulder shooting portraits one fine evening with these guys.  These photos were taken to celebrate the couple’s time in Boulder, as they have since moved to The Bay Area. Thus, we hit up some Boulder landmarks, and got that traditional Flatirons shot from an nontraditional location. How about that Boulder Theater shot?!

sue rakes - Well you have mastered light Steve. These images are some fine images for this couple to enjoy for a lifetime…the lighting on the circled spot is dead perfect! How in the world did you figure that one out!? you did!

Cara and Jared: Wild Horse Inn Wedding Photos

Cara and Jared hosted their wedding celebration at the Wild Horse Inn up in the mountains of Frasier, Colorado. The Inn is right down the road from Devil’s Thumb Ranch, where I shot Ivete and Chris’s wedding photos, as well as the epic Tandem Bike Wedding Couple Photo.  So as you can see, the Winter Park area is one of my favorite locations to shoot!

We started off the day with the prerequisite getting ready detail shots.

Groom Flashes a Loving Look at Bride during wedding vows

After the ceremony, we headed out to a nearby meadow to take some scenic portraits of the wedding couple. After discussing shoot concepts, Jared came up with a vintage truck to use as a prop. The really funny part, is that I picked Ward as a location to do their engagement shoot.  We wound up shooting a bunch of shots with an old fire truck up there. So these guys are officially my vintage truck couple!

My favorite shot from the engagement shoot was this shot, which used a tilt shift lens and the mirror of the truck. This time, I went with a double reflection image to achieve a similar effect.

Once back at the reception, it was time to eat, drink, stuff cake into our faces, and dance into the night. Thanks for reading!

Steve - I love these shots! I so wish I lived in Colorado, what a beautiful place, but a lot of photographers wouldn’t know what to do with it. The shots of the bride and groom in the field with the old Ford are stunning, and the reception looked so fun. Great work here!

Lutt Family .:. Sneak Peek

Yesterday I met up with my favorite Boulder family to capture some family moments in the park. The Lutts are back on the blog with a new addition to the family. Go ahead, tell me that this moment isn’t priceless!  More to come soonish.

Oh, and for you photo nerds out there, this is my first posted image using my new Nikon 85 1.4G. Yes, it’s a very sweet lens!

Nicole and Jonathan: Lone Hawk Farm Wedding Photos

Well it’s Monday morning and I’m going to blow out the cobwebs with a whirlwind blog post from Niki and JJ’s wedding at Lone Hawk Farms!

Niki chose a stunning dress that most notably . . .was not white! As one who loves things that are fresh and different, sometimes I get excited at the little things.

Given that we were out on a farm in North Boulder County, you might expect a lot of nature photos. Lone Hawk Farms also offers opportunities to shoot some architectural shots as well. As a fashionable couple, these kids deserve some fashionable portraits!

The wedding ceremony was as powerful as the direct sunlight pouring from the sky, but slightly less powerful as my desire to eat wedding cake.

After the ceremony, we toured around the property, taking advantage of the myriad of backgrounds on the property. From nature to architecture, posed to candid, I’m always lookin’ for the angles.

During the reception, we were delighted with a standout performance from the Mermaids that was beyond compare.

There was a photobooth on site, but not by my design. I did however happen to be in the area when these kids were playing with the costume props. Love it!

Well that wraps up another day of makin’ the magic. Is it the weekend yet? I need a Monday morning cake infusion!
