Kate and Craig .:. Wedding

Where do I start with Kate and Craig? I’m going to break convention and start at the end. I know that it’s neither proper nor prudent to publicly play favorites in the hallowed halls of the Steve Z wedding blog, but I just can’t help myself. The joy in my heart is bursting through my pores, and I cannot help but sing in the streets. Kate is now my second favorite bride ever, all because she showed up on the cruiser ride and gave me margaritas. She probably would be first, except that it’s pretty much impossible to beat a bride on skis. There, I said it.

A dramatic mountain wedding portrait on the rocks with a view of snow capped mountains in Boulder Colorado

My non-love affair with Kate began at the Hotel Boulderado in the presidential suite. Things started out normal enough, with some classic getting ready shots with her bridesmaids. But then something shifted. What’s that you say Kate? You have a pair of wedding heels, but you’ve decided to wear your old pink Converse All Stars instead?

A bride decides to wear pink Chucks on her wedding day

That decision was no big deal. You get bonus points with this guy for decisions like that. I was wearing black Chucks after all! We forged ahead with documentation of the day and capturing great moments with friends and family.

ALT

The historic Hotel Boulderado is a classic location to begin a wedding day in Boulder. The vintage red velvet curtains and furniture make for an elegant background for wedding details and bridal portraits. The flowers by Boulder Blooms were stunning as usual.

ALT

I will say that Kate was a little nervous with the bridal portraits at first. This is despite growing up with a lens constantly pointed in her direction thanks to her photographer father. I like to think that this next moment was the one that officially broke the ice. Bad Ass.

ALT

After the getting ready portion was done, we prepared for Kate and Craig’s First Look. Remember Craig? This is a story about Kate and Craig.

ALT

Real moments, real memories, right here on Steve Z TV.

ALT

The wedding ceremony was to be held at the Sunrise Amphitheater, which overlooks Boulder from high up on Flagstaff mountain. We made a quick photo pit stop at an overlook point for some incredible scenic mountain wedding portraits overlooking the Continental Divide and the Indian Peaks Wilderness. As usual, the clouds were amazing and I used powerful off camera lighting to increase the drama. Kate increased the drama tenfold by looking absolutely fabulous in her gown from Boulder Bridal.

ALT

Sunrise Amphitheater is one of the most stunning ceremony sites in Boulder,  featuring sweeping views of Boulder, Denver, and Green Mountain. As a photographer, I love this venue for the ability to roam 360 degrees around the couple to capture the best moments and expressions from the couple.

ALT

Despite my goofing around about being funky cool favorites and all, these guys are the real deal. They seem like the perfect match, and their touching ceremony showed how truly in love they really are.

ALT

Before the ceremony, I noticed that there were no clouds when facing east. I really wanted some clouds in The Kiss shot which would point in that direction. I told my assistant that some clouds needed to fly over that spot. Well, here they are. I am the Cloud Whisperer.

ALT

After the ceremony, we headed down the hill and back to the Hotel Boulderado for the reception. I was excited to drive right past Chautauqua in favor of capturing portraits in the infinitely unique locations available in downtown Boulder.

ALT

Hard sun is a way of life in the high desert of Colorado. Most people think that overcast skies are desirable for wedding photography, but I couldn’t disagree more. It is true that overcast skies provide even light, and tame harsh shadows. But the light is so flat and boring! Strong direct sun is not something to be feared, but something to be understood and tamed. I will choose the increased contrast and drama of bright sun over washed out cloudy skies any day.

ALT

There was even an awesome tandem bicycle bride and groom on top of the wedding case. Infinite Steve Z bonus points achieved.

ALT

“Hey Kate, I need a detail shot of the penny-farthing bicycle on Craig’s tie.”

ALT

We took a break from the hot dance party action at the reception to cool off in the night air. This couple even indulged me in some gratuitous night portraits on the street in front of the hotel.

ALT

Kate and Craig’s wedding had all of the elements which make my job a pleasure. Stunning locations, lots of laughs, wedding cake, and most importantly, a truly inspiring love relationship that can inspire us to believe that dreams really do come true.

Marisol and Joseph .:. Elopement

Marisol and Joseph’s wedding was certainly the smallest wedding that I’ve ever been to. The state of Colorado has very lackadaisical marriage laws, and couples can be married by friends, themselves, probably even their dog. In this case it was just the couple and myself; talk about being a third wheel! Having a wedding of the smallest kind does not preclude documenting the occasion with fantastic photos, so we found a little spot in a field adjacent to Boulder Creek to exchange vows. After the ceremony, we toured the Boulder Creek Path and downtown area in search of locations for creative portraits. It was a pleasant afternoon without the stress of planning a gala event for friends and family. There was a bonus for me as well; no Uncle Bob looking over my shoulder!

Jenny and Matt .:. Sport The Dress

Sometimes the best photo shoot ideas arrive at the last minute. Jenny and Matt were clearly excited about their post wedding Sport The Dress session, but when the big day arrived, we still didn’t have a solid idea of where we were going to shoot. My Sport the Dress sessions are not always radical and potentially hazardous. Sometimes we just pick a great location and capture creative wedding portraits that weren’t possible on the wedding day due to time, location, or weather restrictions. But in Jenny and Matt’s case, we already had an overload of stunning outdoor portraits from their wedding day at Perry Park Country Club. So for these clients, I needed to step it up and come up with something over the top. I’m not sure exactly how the idea to have Jenny and Matt tubing in Boulder Creek popped into my head, but I do know I wasn’t exactly sure how well this risky idea was going to turn out. Fortunately for me, my clients are awesome and willing to to take the plunge, so another epic Sport The Dress shoot was on!

We warmed up with a wedding portraits on the side of the creek. It takes some extra time and effort to set up a shot where the water is silky and flowing, but I love the results. The wedding day is usually busy and time is a premium, so this type of shot benefits from the slower pace afforded by a post-wedding day session.

A bride poses for a dramatic wedding portrait along the flowing water of Boulder Creek

The behind the scenes logistics of this session were a little more than I had bargained for. The current was very strong, and it was challenging to get both tubes exactly where I wanted them, because they kept floating away and getting pulled into the strong current. As it turns out, I was still in possession of a borrowed wetsuit from my river trip down the Grand Canyon. This came in very helpful, as Colorado river water was recently in the form of snow. The funniest part is that I found myself pulling these guys around by their foot to get them in position!

This photo shoot was featured in a blog post on the military wedding blog Something Navy. Check out this letter Jenny wrote about her Sport The Dress experience.

Our Sport The Dress idea came about in a rather sporadic fashion. For a few days before our actual photo shoot, we bounced ideas around with our photographer, but nothing seemed to really fit us. We knew we wanted to do something new, different and “legendary,” but our lack of creativity kept our aspirations at bay. We thought about riding bikes, taking pictures on top of a mountain (which are plentiful in Colorado) and doing the classic in-front-of-random-buildings shoot, but it just didn’t fit. Luckily, our photographer is incredible and (two hours before our photo shoot time) he came up with a brilliant plan. The phone call went a little like this:

“Hey Jenny, how do you feel about tubing?”
“Umm I like it. Wait… in my dress?!?!”
“Yeah.”
“Let me get back to you.” (hangs up phone)
“Hey mom, how angry would you be if a ruined my wedding dress?” (She paid for it).
“Not too angry. Just make sure you take good pictures and that I get a copy.”
(Calls Steve Back)
“We’re down.”

Unfortunately, Matt couldn’t wear his uniform in the dirty Boulder Creek water (Perhaps we’ll create a “Trash the Uniform” photo shoot when he retires), so it was up to me to be the brave one and ruin the one dress that I’ve ever actually cared about. But, I guess I’ll do anything for the sake of a good picture.

Once we got to the creek, we started accumulating a crowd of unbelieving people. We took a few pictures on the side of the creek, so spectators mostly thought it was just a model photo shoot (which made me feel pretty cool!) Then, as we climbed into the (freezing cold) creek, we started getting more and more people (and more goosebumps… that water was really cold). We even had a reporter following us around for a local online newspaper, which was super cool!

We took most of the pictures toward the side of the creek, trying to avoid being swept up by the strong currents. Luckily our photographer had a wet suit, which came in handy when he had to rescue us from nearly falling down a small waterfall (and then when he swam after my runaway tube after the grand finale). Our grand finale was going down the creek and getting dunked by the rapids and waterfalls. The photos speak for themselves and I think it’s safe to say that we literally took the plunge. It was an absolute blast, but after having my husband and I spend so much time in that freezing cold water, I’m just glad we took the photos *after* the wedding night.;-)

{Jenny}

After spending some time playing in the eddies of the creek, it was time for the moment everyone had been waiting for; the trip over the falls! A small crowd had built up, and everyone was waiting for the carnage. This was a one shot deal, so we had to get it right! Well Jenny did not disappoint, and even flipped over after the big splash!

The Boulder Daily Camera found our shenanigans interesting enough to send a local photographer/videographer down to check out the scene. He made a great little video that gives you a feel of what it was like to be there.

I have to tell you, this shoot was a ton of fun for me, and we all laughed a ton. I love adventures, and pushing the limits of what I can accomplish is always satisfying. Cheers Jenny and Matt, and thanks for a wedding highlight that we’ll never forget.

Jenny and Matt .:. Wedding

Summertime is upon us, and it’s time to rock out my first mountain wedding of the year on the Steve Z Photography Blog. Jenny and Matt tied the knot on a spectacular June day at the Perry Park Country Club in Larkspur, Colorado. People often assume that I must shoot the same venues year after year, but in actuality, I will be visiting 59% of my 2011 wedding sites for the first time. This useless statistic is great news for me, since I love the excitement of seeking out creative new locations to photograph. The Perry Park Country Club exceeded all expectations, and provided a stunning backdrop for scenic wedding portraits and a lakeside outdoor ceremony.

Jenny and Matt chose to start their wedding day with a First Look, thereby leaving plenty of time for artistic wedding portraits. I was searching around the grounds of the club for a suitable location, when I noticed the groomsmen practicing the Arch of Swords Ceremony. I asked the commanding officer if we could do the First Look under the swords, and my request was granted! This was a unique first for me, and I love the resulting series of images.

The moment when the bride and groom see each other for the first time during the First Look

One of my favorite parts about being a photographer in Colorado is that I have the opportunity to capture wide open western skies filled with dramatic clouds. Often times it appears as though the day is going to turn into a washout, but it never does after I do my special No-Rain Dance. I look a little bit like Elaine from Seinfeld when I’m in the middle of it, but we won’t get into that right now. Here we can see how my special jig has parted the clouds and is allowing light from the heavens to shine down upon Jenny and Matt.

Amazing break in the clouds reveals blue sky and light shining down on a wedding couple in Colorado

The gorgeous outdoor wedding ceremony was held on the deck of the country club of the shore of a mountain lake, with a fantastic view of the Rocky Mountains and some unique red rock formations. This was truly a picture perfect wedding venue.

I have shot military weddings in the past, and each time the Arch of Sabers Ceremony has been a little bit different. This time, the couple had to kiss before they were allowed to pass through each pair of swords. In general, I’m a big fan of dangerous items at a wedding, including swords, giant sparklers, and wild packs of raging golf carts.

I did mention a raging pack of golf carts, right? 2 out of 3 isn’t bad!

The bridal party drives a parade of golf carts around the lake at Perry Park Country Club in Larkspur, Colorado

After the ceremony, the entire wedding party headed out to the other side of the lake, where the golf course lies between unique spires of red rocks. In addition to the rock formations, there were also lush green grassy fields and groves of trees to play in.

A sweet moment during the father daughter dance during a wedding reception

Everyone made it back to the wedding reception safe and sound and no golf carts were lost in the lake. There were laughs, tears, and tender family moments. It’s pretty rare that I get to witness a good old fashioned wedding cake face smash, but this was one of those humorous days!

It is every girl’s dream to catch the bouquet, thereby signifying that they will be the next to get married. Well, maybe not every girl.

Thanks for reading my latest wedding blog story. Check back tomorrow for the exciting conclusion of Jenny and Matt’s wedding photography, where Jenny will Sport The Dress one more time, when she goes tubing in Boulder Creek in her wedding dress!

Lauren and Michael .:. Engagement

The one question that I always ask my wedding clients is, “What’s your story?” The sociologist in me loves to hear the different circumstances that have brought couples together, and the path that led them to become engaged. Sometimes, the beginning of the tale is fairly straightforward, such as “We met online” (which I’ve found to be extremely common this year). Other times, the story has all the twists and turns of a Harlequin romance novel. Lauren and Michael first met when they were in high school. Well, Lauren was actually in 8th grade, and Michael visited her middle school as a freshman to speak to the class about transitioning to high school. She immediately caught his eye, which makes perfect sense to me. A year later, he tracked her down, and they began an on and off relationship that continued throughout high school.

During the college years, Lauren and Michael went their separate ways and moved on to different parts of the country. But Michael became best friends with Lauren’s brother, which kept them connected. Eventually, fate prevailed, and our heroes found themselves back in touch in the same town once again. That inexplicable attraction that drew them together as kids once again pulled them back together.

These are the stories that draw me to wedding photography. I love the concepts of fate and romance, even during times of doubt. I tend to find myself involved in non-linear relationships, and it’s always encouraging to meet couples who have overcome differences, distances, and disputes to connect with their soulmate; that special person with the undeniable pull. Congratulations Lauren and Michael; I’m a sucker for a happy ending.

The Jacobson’s .:. Family Portraits at Chautauqua

Chautauqua Park is certainly the most photographed location in all of Boulder. The beautiful fields of grass and the iconic Flatirons provide a stunning backdrop. The key to creating beautiful portraits here is you have to get up early so that the morning sun provides strong contrast on the unique rock formations. Unfortunately, that same strong sun makes it difficult to get natural light on your subjects. This is why I bring along powerful off camera lighting to highlight my subjects and light their faces evenly. As you can see, this combination creates the ultimate family wall portrait at the quintessential location.

After spending some time on the big scenery, I like to take the kids over to the grassy park and the playground for some candid moments and more importantly some fun. These perfectly imperfect portraits capture the unique personalities of these two girls. Over near the playground, the “dollhouse” is a great spot to capture some of those sparkly eye photos that every mom cherishes. So there you have it, another colorful, energetic and fun family portrait session in the books!

Cayce Elms - Lovely shots! I like that you share your tips!

Allie and Nick .:. Wedding

Today’s blog entry comes to you from Stonebrook Manor in the northern Denver suburbs of Thornton. Allie and Nick were married on Memorial Day, on what was probably the windiest day ever! When I think of Memorial Day, I usually think of opening the pool for the summer, but on this day we were wishing that we had jackets. That’s spring Colorado weather for ya! As with every wedding, the most important things aren’t the details or the picture perfect day, but the great moments spent with family and friends. Read on to see some of my favorite images from the day.

Wedding Ring detail shot in a bouquet of purple flowers

Allie looked absolutely stunning in her wedding dress from d’Anelli Bridal in Denver. Here she enjoys a touching moment with her grandmother while getting ready.

A bride has a touching moment with her grandmother while getting ready for her wedding

This little ring-bearer was quite the character. We have a dozen outtake photos of all of his funny expressions, including a meltdown during the groomsmen portraits that makes me chuckle. I particularly like this “what are you lookin’ at” look.

A young ring-bearer in a tuxedo glares at the camera while on his fathers shoulder

One of the challenging parts of wedding photography as a photographer, is to come up with locations for portraits while under extreme time pressure. You’ve got to present yourself as being cool as a cucumber, even if wind gusts are spoiling your planned locations. I found this stone wall at Stonebrook Manor, imagine that! Functionally, it provided shelter from the wind. Allie still looks super hot despite being cooled as a cucumber.

Bridal Portraits against a stone wall outside Stonebrook Manor

I always capture moments where the bride and groom are looking lovingly at each other. I find these moments truly natural and beautiful. In this moment, the wind lends an element of motion and drama to the image.

A bride smiles lovingly at her husband to be at the wedding altar

Here’s a funny moment, where the wind blew Allie’s long veil into the Best Man’s face. This random act of nature injected a light-hearted moment to the ceremony and brought a wave of laughter over the audience.

A gust of wind blows the brides veil onto the Groom and Best Man

After the excitement of errant veils, thing were back to serious ceremony business. These adult words can prove to be a bit boring for the younger generation. This yawn is almost bigger than her whole face!

A young flower girl has a humorous and huge yawn during a wedding ceremony

I always find it interesting that I attract several engineer brides per year. I have an engineering degree myself, so I know how much of a minority females are in the engineering field. While artistic, there must still be some engineering precision in my photography!

Portrait of a bride and groom at a StoneBrook Manor wedding

I leave you with a tender moment from the First Dance. My artistic side loves the look of the shallow depth and the rim light.  My engineer side loves the fact that the shallow depth of field was created with shiny new Nikon 35mm f/1.4G lens, as well as the PocketWizard MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 radio triggers that allow me to adjust the off camera two light system from the camera. Both sides are clearly winning, but not as much as Allie and Nick, who have found each other and are off on the most amazing adventure of sharing their life together.
