This past week I was up I in Evergreen attending a Shoot With Beckstead workshop. David Beckstead is a recognized award winning photographer who specializes in international destination wedding photography. I’m attending the seminar to spur my artistic creativity for the portrait photography portions of my wedding photography coverage. Everyone at the seminar is instructed to try and shoot while keeping David’s style in mind, to learn and to expand our own vision and sense of art. That style, is available light, strong compositions of lines, form, and shadows, with a distinctly fashion feel.
The first half-day of shooting was with Taylor and Travis. We shot at the Clear Creek History Park in downtown Golden in the bright sunlight, and I got so many cool images, that I’m going to split them up into two blog posts. David picked out some great locations where we could shoot some really cool artistic compositions.
The funny part of this whole business is the ‘fashion’ part of the whole thing. Whenever I look at fashion photography, I’m always intrigued by the lighting and photographic ability, but also humored by the ridiculousness of the models and the poses. So here we are, ‘bridal’ imagery with models looking completely unhappy. Not sure how I feel about that part, and how to adapt the concepts to the images that I want to portray. It IS cool to do something different though. The smoochie-boochie pictures are for the couple, it’s fun to take some photos for ME as well.
The great part about shooting for fun is that there is plenty of room to experiment. And for me experimenting is continuing to play with the tilt shift lens. LOTS of tilting coming over the next several blog posts.
I call this next one “The Mummy”. Hardy har har. :>)
Tune in tomorrow for part 2 of this shoot, where we shot in random semi-urban locations along Clear Creek.
