Christine and David .:. Wedding

Welcome to the latest installment of Steve Z’s adventures in wedding photography! This week we are at the amazing Devil’s Thumb Ranch, which is just outside of Winter Park. Devil’s Thumb is a cross country ski area in the winter, and a spectacular venue for a Colorado mountain wedding. The backdrop is unparalleled, and we enjoyed picture perfect weather as well.

Planning outdoor weddings in the summer is always a roll of the dice; you never know when a thunderstorm is going to roll in and wash things out. Even if it had rained, we could have taken some cool portraits inside the expansive and rustic lodge. On this day, the getting ready and detail shots were the only ones required to be indoors.

The ceremony was magically fantabulous. Christine and Dave were picture perfect center pieces to a picture perfect background!

After the ceremony we all took a little nature walk to take some natural portraits. Love these field shots!

Dave got some major photographer bonus points during the shoot. I pulled out the tilt shift lens, and he knew what it was called by name! I think it’s the first time that has happened. He then said, “So are you going to make us look really small?” Well, I wasn’t, but since you asked, sure!

This next shot is another one for the photo nerds . . . can you tell why only a tilt shift could take this shot?

Following the fun and frolicking in the fantastic fields and forests, I photographed the feelings of friends and family in fervent photojournalist form.

August 9, 2009 - 12:43 pm Ryan J. Bonnell - The only reason a tilt-shift / perspective control lens could have taken the photo of the bride & groom both looking directly up at the camera ... is how both subjects are in focus (despite being a different distance from the focal plane) while the depth of field decreases from left to right. Nice job!
