Emma and Jasper’s wedding rocked at least an 8.2 on the Richter scale of awesomeness. Their ceremony was held at the New Hope Baptist Church in Denver. Emotions were running high, and there were a plethora of amazing photojournalist moments captured.
I thought that I’d post some variety in the old blog this week. The flower girls and ring bearers had some modeling moves that would surely register a knockout punch to Zoolander should they ever face each other in a ‘walk-off’.
After the ceremony we transferred to the Omni Hotel at Interlocken in Broomfield. The Omni resort is home to the Omni Interlocken Golf Club, which is a most excellent location for shooting some creative wedding portraiture of the couple.
Even the spacious interior of the Omni had cool lines and angles. I couldn’t get enough!
I should also mention that Emma, Jasper, Judah, and I shot their Engagement Session in Boulder a couple months ago. You can view those pictures HERE. Thanks guys for the good times and the great photos.
Last weekend I shot my second wedding at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach Florida. Victoria and Alex found my previous blog entry on Google and “fell in love with my style of photography”, as the story goes. I jumped at the opportunity to get some beach time on my birthday. It was a win-win situation!
I started off in my usual manner, warming up with some detail shots. Last time I took the epic shot of the shoe on the balcony, looking over the beach and turquoise blue ocean. Options in the room were limited, so I ventured out into the hallway. How does this one rank on the epic scale?
The dress may look pretty good on the hanger, but seriously, how good does it look on Victoria? 10 on the epic scale, I say!
Well, one problem with shooting wedding in the tropics in the summer, is the ever present threat of thunderstorms. South Florida was in a moist flow of the Gulf Stream, and it had rained every afternoon for 2 weeks. Today was no exception. Luckily we were able to get the First Look in before the first round of storms rolled in.
But soon enough, the rains came and we headed into the Breakers to shoot some indoor portraits. I had noticed this particularly cool steel gate earlier in the day.
But just as fast as it started, the rain subsided, and we were able to get some more fantabulous portraits on the spacious grounds of the resort.
I think I may have accidentally manifested the wedding to be held indoors instead of on the ceremony lawn. So sorry guys! When I first arrived at the Breakers, I was secretly hoping the reception would be held in the Gold Room. I found out that it was actually being held in the Magnolia Room. Well, as it turned out, when the outdoor ceremony was rained out, it was held in the Gold Room instead! I always get what I want.
This wedding was an intimate affair, with only around 30 close friends and family in attendance. The happy couple is planning a big bash in the near future where everyone can tear the roof off. On this night, the couple enjoyed a gorgeous venue and intimate moments amongst the people who they care about most. Even the first dance was opened up to everyone around halfway through the song. That didn’t stop anyone from enjoying the moment to the fullest.
Speaking of living life and the fullest, Alex managed to throw down an entire sundae! Yes, there was wedding cake AND sundaes. I lied earlier in this post; I don’t always get what I want.
In order to work off desert, we headed outside to fool around in front of the fountain. Here is a photo of Victoria and Alex running off to their honeymoon. Or something like that. Whatever. I’m out of jokes. You should check out the vendors below if you are planning a wedding in the area. That part is no joke!

Lindy-licious and the Keith-ificator bestowed upon me the honor of photographing their amazing wedding in the halls of the First Presbyterian Church in Boulder Colorado. What started off as a classy, and mild mannered event eventually snowballed into a party that tore the roof off of the fabulous St. Julian Hotel. Let us begin with classy, shall we?
We casually started off the day by documenting some sexy shapes and lines in the form of some detail shots of the rings and shoes. Wonder Twin powers, ACTIVATE: shape of Lindy’s shoes, form of an ice bucket. Well, OK that was obscure. :>)
Lindy, Keith and I had our picture review in the studio yesterday. We were looking at the bridal pictures and laughing at how Lindy’s natural personality is to laugh all the time, and she wasn’t able to be serious during any of the photos. Well, here is serious face image number 2 of 3 for the day. She looks as great in color as it does black and white! I still can’t decide which I like better.
After the getting ready proceedings and the First Look, we all headed down to downtown Boulder’s First Presbyterian Church. We had some extra time to kill in a little classroom while we waited for the guests to be seated. Hmmm, what to do, what to do? I decided that we needed to get a dry-erase marker, and have a little lesson on ‘The Rules’ before things went down for real. Here is what we learned, kids!
One thing about church ceremonies, is that they often relegate photographers to the back of the room. So what is a photographer to do when his location is limited? I vote for pulling out the awesome lenses.
There is someone I know whose favorite wedding shots are those of the couple during the recessional. This is the time when the couple has this overwhelming joy on their faces, that reads, “WHEW! We did it!” Love this shot!

When it’s time to party … nothing gets party’s started like cake. And there is no cake that is cuter than a cupcake. Except a pastel cupcake. Tee and Cakes sure knows how to tempt a working man into sneaking off into the vendor room to wolf down an illicit cupcake before the guests enter the room. It’s a good thing The Chad and I have cast iron constitutions.
And speaking of party, weren’t we speaking of party? Yes, I think we were, and Lindy and Keith’s crew threw down the gauntlet. I will admit, I witnessed my first ‘wave’ go ’round reception tables. And after that? Conga line. Radical!
And then, just when you thought it couldn’t rock any harder, Keith and his college buddies got the band back together, and Lindy pulled the coup and became the first woman to join the band! There is nothing more fantabulous than the facial expressions of a drummer in his element. Well other than a photography roller bag filled with extra leftover chocolate cupcakes.
Kara and Jacob know how to party. These are the raddest kinds of clients, the ones that become friends even after the job is done! We started off the fun in January for with an epic-ly snowy engagement session. Then we had a picture review and some margs at the Rio. A week before the wedding the bridal party and friends hung out for a raucous Boulder bar night, and then a ski party at The Beach at Arapahoe Basin. The night before the wedding was the rehearal dinner followed by drinks downtown. And than, after all that, finally the day came for biggest party of all, their fantastic wedding at the Trinity Church and Grand Hyatt in Denver.
What what strobed 16 times in 15 seconds? Kara’s wedding dress photo. Sorry, photo nerd joke. Continue on, nothing to see here.
The ceiling of the limo was most excellent. The yellow halo is the reflection of a taxi cab on the street behind us.
The happy couple met up before the ceremony so that we could get the formal photographs taken care of early. We did a First Sight ceremony behind the front gates of the Trinity Church. This series of photos is really, really wonderful, you need to see the full set! Kara and Jacob are so excited to see each other for the first time, it’s pretty cool to see.
I haven’t been playing with the wonky lens too much lately. I’m going to bring it back. Right now.
Between the ceremony and the reception we stopped off at the Denver Art Museum for some arty photos. Here is the bridal party looking dapper. It was all downhill after this for this crew. If you know them, you know what I mean. :>)
It was pretty hard to get a photo of these guys NOT smiling. They had the happiness meter pegged at 11.
Back at the Pinnacle Club at the Grand Hyatt, the cake was enjoying the view from the 38th floor! Don’t worry cake, we’ll meet again soon enough.
The reception features lot’s of laugh’s tears and touching family moments. And after all that was done, DJ Cameron turned up the throttle and opened up a party that the Hyatt hasn’t seen in quite some time. And the best part is that the party isn’t over yet! We will be heading up to Arapahoe Basin for a fantastic fashion Sport The Dress shoot in the next couple weeks, so stay tuned for more epic good times!
Special thanks once again to all the amazing vendors who put their heart and soul to make this event the masterpiece that it was!
Paula and Harry became Mr. and Mrs. Levine on March 7th in Denver, Colorado. I was excited to be shooting at a new venue: The Westin Tabor Center.
The Bridal Suite was super sweet, apparently the same room that Obama stayed in during the Democratic National Convention. I’m pretty sure that he wore a similar dress and shoes while lounging in the spacious suite. OK maybe not. But this was his bathrobe, I KNOW it!
Portrait of the groom on the balcony? Check. 16th Street Mall Clock Tower in the frame? WIN!
We didn’t do too much posed photography during this wedding. Paula and Harry appreciate the photojournalist style of shooting, and prefer to have most of the moments captured naturally. Plus, we already lived on the wild side during our engagement shoot last fall. Here are a couple, real, genuine, and true looks of love.
This was a Jewish wedding, and the Chuppah was stunning! The lighting in the ceremony was super cool, I enjoyed the chandeliers and the lighting in the ceiling as well.
So I actually had a cold on this day. It wasn’t too bad, I took a bunch of Sudafed and rocked it out anyway. The saddest part was that I was too tired at the end to relax and eat wedding cake. I’m going to have to eat two pieces next time.
When it came to the dancing, my oh my, this couple threw it down! They had choreographed moves that I’ve never even seen before.
I want to thank all of my associate vendors for making this event such a smashing success!
There are many things that I love being a wedding photographer in Boulder Colorado. And one of them is that I see a wide variety of nontraditional weddings. Erin and Duncan are new to Colorado, but they bring a free spirited San Fransisco flair that fits right in. In his speach Duncan told the tale of the intensive process of obtaining authentic Scottish garments from the region of his ancestors. I think the effort was well worth it.
The wedding ceremony and reception were both held at the Greenbriar Inn in Boulder, Colorado. I have shot here a few times in the past, but this was the first winter wedding, so we had to have the ceremony inside. First we shot some nice bridal portraits and detail shots in the upstairs dining room to show off Erin’s epic dress.
She didn’t have a big train, but a wide angle lens can make that dress look like it went on for miles.
Here are some highlights of a few photojournalist captures during the ceremony.
When it came time to set up the formals, I asked the Father of the Bride to pose for me while I took some test shots. Nice work!
After persevering through 20 minutes of outdoor formals on an overcast and cold winter day, Erin toughed it out for some couples portraits in the field. I edited this wedding with some vintage tones, which I feel are appropriate for the time of year.
Erin really liked the jumping shot that I did in this same location last year. Well, these guys weren’t blessed with the vertical leap of Matt and his triathlete and Marine buddies. So we added a little humorous twist!
That is all from this mild mannered photographer for another blog post. I have February off from weddings, so look for some portrait and engagement shoots to be posted here over the next month until the weddings return in March. Thanks for reading.
A special thanks goes out to my affiliate vendors at this wedding!
