A quick blog post on a Friday showing an image from Alisha’s senior portrait photo session. We got tons of great photos during normal daylight hours, and kept shooting and shooting until the sun went down. I like this photo since it’s a bit of a different style than the natural light photos that I’ve been shooting a lot of recently. Alisha is lit with my Kacey portable beauty dish with a grid attached. More photos to come soon!

Once in a while I get a specific request for a location for a senior portrait shoot. I was super stoked when I got a call from Brandon saying that he wanted to take shots wakeboarding on Boulder Reservoir. I was wicked stoked when I found out that he was going to wakesurf as well! The best part about wakesurfing is that it is close enough to the boat to light the subject with a strobe. I was able to underexpose the dramatic cloudy sky and get this killer sport portrait. There are more shots to come in the next week or two!
One of the things about shooting urban senior portraits in Boulder is that we don’t really have a ton of urban location choices. My latest interest is shooting in areas that are a fusion between the two. The recipe calls for one part urban architecture, one part nature, then add a dash of fabulousness . . . then you know what you get? Awesomesauce!

Hidee Ho again blog fans! I’m back with photos from an awesomely marvelorific high school senior portrait session with Madison. I found a great new location where I can shoot both an urban and nature style shots in the same shoot. I’d tell you where it is, but then I’d have to kill you.

What’s there to say? Here is Madison. Killin’ it.

After we finished up with the urban-ish shots, we were walking down the street towards the nature location. Most of my seniors are looking for something different than conventional shots taken in front of flowers and such. So I took it as a challenge to take a flower shot that kicks ass. My go to lens for ass kicking out of the box portraits is the 85mm tilt shift.

Into the wilds of urban nature! So, this all started when I cleaned my garage, and found this yellow pair of wader boots. Yes, putting a senior in the swamp, that sounds like a great idea! I didn’t have waders, so I was just standing in there in bare feet. Which was actually kinda refreshing, until a passerby says, “Hey there are snakes in there.” Thanks for the tip, but I risk life and toe to get the shot for my clients!

Other than a great personality and cool props, another thing that really ties a shoot together is great wardrobe. A lot of times I don’t go for strong patterns, but here are a couple examples where it works really well! The tie die colors really pop against the solid panels of the umbrella in the above shots. For the shots below, I love the subtle pop of the florescent colors against the earth tones. Madison got this sweet dress when she was down in the Caribbean. I knew when I saw it in the wardrobe collection that it would work perfectly.

On this day we were also blessed with perfect summer evening light. It was one of those special shoots that makes you wanna say, “I love it when a plan comes together!”

Here is a Sneak Peek photo from my most recent High School Senior portrait session which was on The Hill in Boulder. The cool thing about this photo is that Olivia spotted the yellow chair in the alley and suggested using it! I was fiddling with my camera settings, and she was just sitting in the chair looking at me like this. I said, “Don’t move!”, and quickly snapped the shot. A great way to capture a natural pose is to let it happen naturally!
