Eric has been a friend of mine for a couple years now. He is the manager for my favorite local band, Meniskus. I’ve shot pictures of the band a few times for fun, and Eric has always been appreciative of the efforts. Being a photographer himself, he knows great photography when he sees it!
(Heh heh, get ready for a lot of jokes in this post . . . ) Since he’s seen me take photos and party at the same time, it is a natural fit for him to invite me to shoot at his wedding, which with Meniskus being featured as ‘Best Band’, is surely going to be the Wedding Party of the new millennium.

We headed out for a little engagement shoot out the doors of the palatial Steve Z Studios in downtown Boulder. I love the challenge of finding new locations within 2 blocks of my office. This next location is in the Chase Bank flower planter at the corner of 14th and Canyon. Because sitting in a bank planter in front of 4 lanes of city traffic puts me in the mood every time.

The first information on Nicole and Eric’s wedding website reads like this:
Nicole Alison Camper
AKA: Camps
Height: 6′ (6’3″ in heels)
Eric Joshua Spellman Singer
AKA: Manos
Height: 6’5″ (7′ in heels)
I think these stats are directly responsible for the fact that I’ve only chosen one horizontal composition for this entire blog post. A vertical orientation usually requires cutting them off at some point. I had to lay them down on the ground to fit their entire long bodies in a horizontal shot.

The first actual sentence in their wedding site reads:
“Colorado’s number one Power Couple (by height) came from humble roots . . .”
This was clearly written by Eric, who has quite the sense of humor. Don’t you Eric?

Well I clearly have a sense of humor as well. And put together, this is a volatile combination which yields unpredictable results.

Then we have Nicole, who surely has the biggest sense of humor of all. She is marrying Eric after all! Seriously, they both were awesome to work with, and I was able to really go for some unique shots. This shot was lit in daylight with 2 strobes on either side. The funny part, is the strobe on the right is being held by a fisherman in waders standing in Boulder Creek!

For our last location, we headed to these metal sculptures that I’ve been eyeing for a while. When we showed up there was another photographer already here shooting senior portraits. I couldn’t believe that there was a queue! I’m at least 80 percent sure that the senior didn’t get any shots that turned out like these however.

Well, the wedding is coming up fast, and I’m really looking forward to this one. It is going to be held at a venue that has just started doing weddings in Estes Park. It’s called Lost Antler Ranch, and looks like it is going to be amazingly beautiful. Plus, I’m hooked up with a few nights stay, so it will be a little retreat as well! See you then!

sandy spellman - Steve,
I LOVE your shots of Eric & Nicole! Being a photographer and erstwhile painter myself, I have an eye for composition, contrast and lighting. I am very eager to see how you will capture the wedding weekend and I’m glad that E&N ignored my advice to skip having a professional photographer in order to limit costs. I’m confident you will produce an impressive collection of memorable and beautiful images.
See you in September at the ranch.
Eric’s mother and Nicole’s almost-mother-in-law, sandy
Ken Singer - Phenomenal pix. So glad you’re doing the main shooting. That takes the pressure off of us to get a lot of good shots and we can concentrate on the relatives who otherwise might be boring for you.
